Disability News

News Our disability news section will provide any disability related news, events or announcements about people, government, equipment, culture, and etc.

All news, events or announcements will have something to say about living with a disability and create awareness and positive attitudes toward disabilities in our society. We would like to have news, events or announcements that deal with the rights of people with disabilities, eliminating inequality and discrimination, and issues of self-help and consumer advocacy.

We invite people from all over United States to participate in our news section. If you see any current news, events or announcements with a valid present on the web that is relevant to disability, we would love to hear from you. Each year an estimated 2,655 deaths and 13,025 injuries occur as the result of residential building fires. The risk of death or injury from fire is even greater for people with physical, mental, or sensory disabilities. Declining mobility, health, sight, and hearing may limit a person’s ability to take the quick action necessary to escape during a fire emergency.

SACRAMENTO, CA (CDCAN) [Updated 11/02/2010 11:00 PM (Pacific Time)] - The Department of Social Services, the State agency that oversees statewide the In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS) program that provides in-home supports to over 460,000 children and adults with disabilities, mental health needs, the blind and seniors, has scheduled a stakeholder meeting on November 19, from 10:30 AM to 12 Noon, at the Department of Technology Services Training & Event Center, 9323 Tech Center Drive, Conference Room 2 in Sacramento, that will focus on the State’s implementation regarding the additional serious or violent felonies that could disqualify a person from working as an IHSS worker (provider).

At midday October 29, The California Department of Education (CDE) announced it would provide $76 million in federal Individuals with Disability Education Act (IDEA) funds to continue critical mental health services for special education students throughout the state.

WATERLOO, Iowa --- Though he grew up with a brother who was deaf, Sen. Tom Harkin says he only gradually realized the hurdles people with disabilities face. It took encounters with others facing disabilities during the Iowa Democrat's early years in Congress before he got involved with legislation removing those hurdles.

Purdue University has received a $2 million federal grant to help people with disabilities study science. The funding will support the creation of an Institute for Accessible Science at Purdue, which will include a wet laboratory and a Web-based interactive community for individuals with disabilities currently working in, or interested in, biomedical research careers.

The budget package lawmakers are set to vote on Thursday includes new rules that would restrict violent felons from working in the state's massive home healthcare program. A Times report last month revealed that scores of people convicted of crimes such as rape, elder abuse and assault with a deadly weapon are permitted to care for some of California's most vulnerable residents through the In-Home Supportive Services program.

In 1986, the California Legislature decided to use state and county agencies — other than the school district — to provide certain related services. They did this to maximize and better coordinate public resources to support students with disabilities receiving special education services.

Using smartphones and the internet should become much easier for blind and deaf people, with the passing of a bill forcing providers to make their products more accessible. New federal guidelines introduced in the 21st Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act, signed by Barack Obama on Friday, call for improved interfaces on smartphones, captions and audible descriptions for television programs, and compatibility between hearing aids and internet phone services.

In September 2010, the percentage of people with disabilities in the labor force was 21.6. By comparison, the percentage of persons with no disability in the labor force was 69.9. The unemployment rate for those with disabilities was 14.8 percent, compared with 9.0 percent for persons with no disability, not seasonally adjusted.
